OF BLOWHARDS AND CHILDREN

Good heavens.

I'd forgotten why I stopped reading this blog, but now I remember why.

Not that you care, but no I don't think that President Obama particularly likes America.

OF SHOES AND LEFTIST IDIOCY

If all we'd wanted was Iraqi oil, then an invasion would have been the dumbest way to get it. Military actions are expensive and risky, as yes even the evil neocons know.

Rather, we'd have simply cut a deal with Saddam. We'd have said "look, stop pretending like you have WMD for a bit and we'll get the Security Council to end the sanctions. We'll sign a sweetheart deal and just buy the oil from you."

Saddam would have thought about it for 1/3 of a second and then agreed.

Everyone would have gone home happy; we get cheap oil, Saddam gets out of the sanctions regime.

Easy as pie.

GOP DEBATE AN EXERCISE IN PILING ON

Am I the only one who noticed that Thompson cannot get through a sentence without at least three "um"s? He's the worst extemporaneous speaker of the bunch.

Other than that, Rick, I pretty much agree with everything you say.

OBAMANIA! IS HE THE LIBERAL REAGAN?

No, Hillary will not necessarily win the nomination and no the Dem candidate will not necessarily win the White House. Remember how the msm had all but nominated Howard Dean and how Gore then Kerry were supposed to beat Bush?

Many Democrats cringe at Hillary's high negatives. She's shrill and unpersonable. They know that if they nominate her the right will resurect all the Clinton-era scandals again and again and again and....

Finally, just because the public isn't happy with Iraq doesn't mean they want a return to Carterism. Not a single Dem candidate has a credible foreign policy, and Edward's recent speech on military policy shows how out to lunch he is. Obana is another Carter. Hillary, we all know, would starve the military of funds for her big-government programs.

FOR LOVE OF JUSTICE

Is this post a joke? Sadly, I don't think it is. You're making it a lot harder to win this war, Rick. Thanks for nothing

LEBANESE POLL AN EYE OPENER

Things can always get worse, Mitzi. Never forget that.

Re the poll, it puts the lie to UN Aid Chief Jan Egeland's statment the other day that Israel's attach has "created a generation of hatred."

Note to Egeland; they already hate Israel.

"What is most troubling is the apparent identification of Hizbullah as a force defending Lebanon. This is a change from before the war when most Druze and Christians saw Hizbullah as a danger to the Lebanese state."

Agreed. I'm not happy about it either. But what are we to do about it? It seems to me that the lesson is "don't let armed factions like Hezbollah take root in the first place." Hezbollah has been attacking US and Israeli targets for over 20 years, and we haven't done squat about it. Now, Israel finally goes after them, and everyone gets their panties in a wad.

We should have made Hezbollah a target after 9-11, at the very least. Bush might have had the political capital to add them to the list back then. Now, with all that's happening in Iraq, it's too late. The least we can do is support Israel for doing what we should have done, or should be helping them do.

HIZBULLAH "OFFER" TO DISARM IS A CROCK

"at least they are talking"

And why is that good? What exactly is there to talk about? Israel just want's to live in peace. Hezbollah wants to destroy Israel and won't stop until they've succeeded. Any talking is just waving a piece of paper with one hand while holding an umbrella with the other.

CIA VS. THE WHITE HOUSE: THE BIRD THAT ISN'T SINGING

What Larry Johnson is saying is that because McCarthy is a Democrat she is immune. What a convenient argument.

My only question is, why isn't she under inditement?

BAGHDAD AS IT IS, NOT AS WE WISH IT TO BE

I can't say that I don't understand why you're so gloomy, Rick. And I think that your analysis of the political situation in the US is on-target. Bush is loosing the political battle at home, and this is causing even members of his own party to run away from him.

That said, I have to agree with what chris said. Yes the situation in Baghdad is bad, and it is distressing that the Iraqis are taking so long to put together a government.

But perceptions are everything, as Bill Roggio points out. And contrary to Tom Friedman's panic-mongering, we are increasing troop levels in the capital.

What seems to be happening, then, is that the insurgency is concentrating it's efforts in the capital because 1) it's easier to remain anonymous in a big city and 2) that's where the reporters are.

Further, as Richard Hernandez concludes, the Sunni insurgency is beaten (Zarqawi has practically admitted this), and that the real danger now is political. By this I mean that unless there is a political solution, and soon, then Iraq will indeed slide into more and more sectarian violence. This violence will be characterized more by reprisal killings than "civil war" as most people understand it, which would be two rival governments each with it's own army.

ABOUT THAT SLIPPERY SLOPE...

"Does anyone remember the movie 1973 sci-fi movie “Soylent Green” with Charlton Heston?"

Oh yes, and I had exactly the reaction you did when I saw it. I'd forgotten about that movie, but I do believe you have a very good point. It's not as philosophical as a "Brave New World", but the point it makes seems more relevant as time goes on.

Odd, isn't it, that we live in a society that treasures safety uber alles, some are ready to cast off the disabled as yesterday's garbage?

Perhaps, trollGeorge Jones, you ought to consider that it is the left's insistence on abortion-on-demand which has created this mentality, rather than ranting on about some theocracy you think Bush is trying to create in Iraq.
